As the Chief General Manager for Broker and Agency it is not only my role to build a high performing team that addresses the needs and concerns of our brokers and clients, but an area I’m also passionate is ensuring my team is able to achieve a sensible work life balance.

At Allianz, we continue to implement initiatives that support the relationship between employee wellbeing and business. Statistics suggest that more work still needs to be done to break the trend of poor work life balance.

Personally, I always seek to balance my work and career, family and friends and health and fitness. Fitness is a priority of mine, not only have I improved my personal health and fitness but I have been able to reduce stress levels and increase productivity. I have only been able to achieve this by going to the gym, walking and swimming.

As a resident of Mosman in Sydney, I have been participating in the Balmoral Swim for Cancer Challenge for the past five years, which has meant I have had to increase my training on weekends.

Organised by Sydney’s Balmoral Beach Club1, the Swim is an annual fundraiser that has raised more than $1M for multiple cancer-related charities including, the Cancer Council, Camp Quality, and more recently the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA).

Attracting more than 1,000 participants each year, the day consists of a five kilometre swim, a local schools challenge, a 200 metre junior event and the main event the one kilometre swim. It’s a day when the whole community comes together from the local Navy (HMAS Penguin), to the local scout groups, and other local businesses.

By participating in the Balmoral Swim for Cancer Challenge, I am not only reminded of my commitment to supporting the community, but also my team. As a leader in the business community, I am reminded of how powerful leading by example is.

Businesses can implement all the initiatives they want but real changes around work life balance won’t come, until leaders make the choice to choose health and well-being, therefore giving permission to their teams to also go out and enjoy a complete and balanced life.

1 Allianz has been a platinum sponsor of the Balmoral Swim for Cancer Challenge since 2014.
