Some key things to consider to stay safe on your travels.
Pickpockets are a risk in the major cities, especially around rail and bus transport hubs, major attractions and other crowded places. Beware of petty theft, minor crime and scams. Only carry as much cash as you need, and have hardcopy and electronic copies of your travel documents (or store them safely at your accommodation).
Natural disasters caused by harsh weather conditions such as snowstorms, gales, floods and heat waves can affect your travel plans. Refer to Smartraveller for current travel alerts affecting Europe before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels.

Even if travel insurance isn’t mandatory for your destination, travel insurance for Europe can be a great decision in case something goes wrong on your trip. Travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation.

Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip. Allianz Comprehensive Travel Insurance offers optional Increased Item Limits cover for loss of higher value personal effects and luggage, Adventure Packs, and more at an additional cost2.

If your rental vehicle is involved in an accident while it’s being driven by you and you’re the nominated driver, or it’s damaged or stolen while in your custody, we’ll pay you the lesser of (up to your benefit limit)2:

  • the amount specified that you’re liable to pay under the rental vehicle agreement, or
  • the property damage for which you’re liable.

If you’re diagnosed by the treating medical adviser as unfit to return your rental vehicle to the nearest depot, we’ll pay the cost of returning the vehicle (up to the applicable benefit limit).

Note: This cover only applies if:

  • you hire a rental vehicle from a rental company or agency;
  • you’re a nominated driver on the rental vehicle agreement; and
  • the rental vehicle agreement specifies a maximum amount that you must pay if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
If your trip involves a cruising element, consider buying a Cruise Pack for an additional premium, which may be added to Comprehensive or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance. It’s designed to include Medical Cover while cruising, Ship to Shore Evacuation Cover, Cabin Confinement, and a range of other items2.

Some activities are included under a Basic, Comprehensive or Multi-Trip policy, but for activities like riding a moped, tandem parachuting and abseiling, consider buying an Adventure Pack for an additional premium2,5.

If you’re going to hit the slopes, you may wish to consider buying an optional Snow Pack to a Comprehensive or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance policy for an additional premium2,5.

Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for a full list of sports and activities automatically included, as well as what activities the Adventure Pack is designed to cover.

Maybe you want to spend a gap year backpacking your way across Europe or you simply have an abundance of time on your hands. You can get Basic or Comprehensive Travel Insurance for up to 12 months, subject to eligibility criteria2. When buying your policy, your journey must start and end in Australia, and you must declare your departure and return dates.
If you regularly travel to Europe in one year, you can buy a Multi-Trip Travel Insurance policy, which is designed to cover multiple trips over a 12-month period. You organise one policy and pay the one premium for all trips from Australia – to Europe or other countries and return2 – for a year. Just choose what your longest trip duration will be (choose from 15, 30 or 45 days).

A Comprehensive Travel Insurance policy for Europe is designed to cover you for theft, loss or damage to luggage, personal effects and valuables2. The sub-limit for a camera, lenses, tripod, and accessories is up to $3,0002. If your equipment is valued at more than that, consider buying Increased Item Limits Cover for an additional premium when you buy your policy.4

Refer to Increased Item Limits Cover section of the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.
