What does Renter Insurance cover?
Our Renter Insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing your belongings at your rented home. This includes your furniture, electrical appliances, clothes, linen, kitchen items and more.

It covers fixtures, fittings and structures you’re legally responsible for under your lease agreement with your landlord – even if you don’t own them. Plus, you can cancel anytime with no cancellation fees.2

Frequently asked questions
Getting started
Allianz Renter Insurance provides contents cover for renters. It’s designed to help cover the cost of loss or damage to items you own and are responsible for at your rental home. It covers not just the belongings in your rental home, but the life you’ve created there too.
Renter Insurance covers your belongings if something unexpected happens. Here are a few examples of how it can work when an insured event occurs:
- Fire damage. If the house or apartment you rent is damaged by fire and your belongings are destroyed, Renter Insurance can help you replace your insured items, if your cover amount is high enough (this is called your sum insured).
- Theft. If someone breaks into your home and steals your belongings, Renter Insurance can help pay to replace the items that were taken.
- Accidental breakage at home. If you accidentally drop your bookshelf while moving furniture and it breaks the glass in your coffee table, Renter Insurance can cover the broken glass. If you have added optional accidental damage cover, Allianz can repair or replace the entire coffee table, not just the glass.
Keep in mind you’ll typically need to pay an excess when you make a claim.
Allianz Renter Insurance and Allianz Contents Insurance are very similar, but they’re designed for different living situations:

| Feature | Allianz Renter Insurance | Allianz Contents Insurance |
| Designed for | People who rent | Homeowners (often apartment owners) |
| Policy type | Contents‑only policy tailored to lease obligations | Contents policy that can be bundled with Building Insurance. |
| Living situation | Rented home | Owner occupied home |
| Personal belongings | Covers your personal belongings in a rented home | Covers contents in an owned home |
| Fixtures and fittings | Covers fixtures or fittings you’re legally responsible for under your lease (even though you don’t own them) | Not designed for tenant lease responsibilities |
In practice, Renter Insurance is a contents‑only policy tailored to lease obligations.
- Covers your personal belongings in a rented home
- Covers fixtures or fittings you’re legally responsible for under your lease (even though you don’t own them)
- Includes legal liability if someone is injured or property is damaged in an accident you’re legally responsible for (for example, if someone trips on your belongings and needs medical costs covered)
- Structured and worded for tenant responsibilities
Cover and benefits
Yes, you’re covered for damage to parts of your rental property that you’re legally responsible for under your lease agreement – even if you don’t own them.
It’s a good idea to check your lease carefully and include the value of any fixtures, fittings or structures you’re responsible for in your general contents sum insured. This helps make sure you’re covered if something goes wrong.
Here’s an example to illustrate how it works.
A typical Australian lease often says something like: ‘The tenant is responsible for repairing any damage caused by the tenant or their guests, excluding fair wear and tear.’
This creates a financial risk for the renter, not the landlord.
For example, say you’re renting an apartment in Sydney. Your lease states that you’re responsible for:
- Accidental damage you cause
- Damage caused by guests
- Broken fixtures during the tenancy
A guest accidentally knocks over a heavy object and: cracks the ceramic bathroom sink (fixture owned by landlord) and damages your TV and bookshelf (your belongings).
With Allianz Renter Insurance:
- Your TV and bookshelf can be covered as contents as long as you’ve added optional accidental damage cover to your policy
- The cracked sink can be covered because your lease says you’re responsible
This is the type of scenario Allianz Renter Insurance is designed for – covering both your belongings and lease‑related responsibility. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pay an excess when you make a claim.
Legal liability cover can help if:
- Someone is injured or their property is damaged because of an accident you're legally liable for
- You damage someone else’s property and are legally required to pay for it
Accidental damage isn’t automatically covered. You can add it to your policy when you get a quote.
Even in a furnished property, Renter Insurance covers your own items, such as clothes, electronics, and other personal belongings.
The landlord’s furniture usually isn’t covered by your policy unless your lease makes you responsible for damage.
To cover items you take with you outside the home, you can add Portable Contents cover.
Portable Contents cover lets you insure items you wear or carry outside your insured address, such as:
- Handbags or wallets
- Sunglasses or jewellery
- Musical instruments
- Mobile phone
You can choose:
- Unlisted Portable Contents – covers items under $1,000, up to $1,000 per item and $5,000 per claim
- Listed Portable Contents – covers specific items valued at $1,000 or more for their full replacement value (minus any excess)
With Portable Contents cover, eligible items are covered anywhere in the world for up to 90 continuous days.
Claims, costs and changes
The cost of your insurance is called a ‘premium’. Your premium will depend on a number of factors, and can change each year when you renew your policy. Your premium for each period of insurance will be shown on your policy details document.
There are a number of factors that determine how your Allianz Renter Insurance premium is calculated, including:
- Your risk profile. We work this out using a number of factors, such as:
- Where you live
- The type of property you’re insuring
- The amount and type of cover you require
- Any other people also insured under the policy
- The relevant claims history of the people being insured
- The likelihood of a claim being made on your policy
- Any discounts that may apply
- Any compulsory government charges such as Stamp Duty and GST
- Emergency Services Levies if they apply to the State or Territory where your home is located
- Any other charges we tell you of
- The excess you choose7

Yes. Allianz Renter Insurance policies can be changed or cancelled if your circumstances change, such as moving house. You can cancel anytime with no cancellation fees.
When you make a claim, you usually need to pay an excess. An excess is the amount you contribute towards the claim. We pay the rest.
You pay one excess for each insured event, plus any additional excesses that apply. The amount you pay is shown in your policy documents. For example, if your claim is for $10,000 and your excess is $1,000, you pay $1,000 and the insurer pays the remaining $9,000.
