Fiji is a safe destination and very welcoming to tourists. Be aware that the tropical climate breeds mosquitoes that carry diseases. Water activities may not have the same safety standards that you are used to. Thefts, scams and begging can also occur in the larger cities.

The pacific region is prone to severe weather events like storms, cyclones and flooding. Particularly from November to April. Ensure you are prepared for the weather. Check forecasts and warnings before you head off sightseeing.

Be careful while participating in beach activities. Drownings can occur and injuries such as cuts and grazes from the coral can lead to infections. If you do get a coral cut, clean it immediately and apply an anti-bacterial cream.

Also be careful in the sun. Ensure you have a waterproof high factor sunscreen. Reapply regularly if you are swimming.

Think twice about purchasing fish or meat from roadside markets. The storage temperatures can be quite warm, encouraging bacteria to grow. Choose fully cooked meat options to reduce your risk of food poisoning. You should also avoid foods that may have been washed in unsafe tap water.

Fiji is a developing country. The medical facilities are not as well equipped as in Australia, especially when you head to outlying islands or remote villages. If you do become seriously ill in Fiji, you may need to be treated at a private hospital or medically evacuated back to Australia for treatment.

The most extensive coral reef system in the world can be found in the surrounding waters of Fiji. Home to over 1,000 species of fish and hundreds of different corals, Fiji provides spectacular views for the underwater explorer.

Our travel insurance policies are design to cover activities like snorkelling and surfing. If your trip to Fiji involves scuba diving or more adventurous water activities, consider purchasing an optional Adventure Pack for an additional premium when you buy a Comprehensive or Multi-trip policy1,4.

One of the best ways to explore the 322 islands that make up the Fijian Archipelago is by cruise. Visit Mamanuca Islands, known as the picture-perfect tropical island getaway. The beaches of the Yasawas are also popular with their towering volcanic rocks and the tranquil Blue Lagoon.

If you are cruising to or going on a cruise that includes a stop in Fiji, consider purchasing an optional Cruise Pack for an additional premium. Our Cruise Pack is designed to provide cover for medical expenses while cruising, ship to shore evacuation plus more1.

If you’re travelling to Fiji, travel insurance is an important consideration for medical and hospital expenses if you injure yourself or become sick. In addition, travel insurance can cover for unexpected events that may disrupt your trip such as cancellations, lost luggage, or travel delays.
