Vietnam is a vibrant destination, rich in culture. But like any international trip, your holiday in Vietnam can come with uncertainties.

Visitors to Vietnam should be cautious of bag slashing and pickpockets in popular tourist areas. Always keep your belongings secure.

Stay alert at night, particularly when using overnight trains.

Always keep an eye on your drinks to reduce the risk of drink spiking.

Vietnam’s roads are overcrowded and poorly maintained. Many drivers may not follow traffic rules. If you're unfamiliar with the road conditions, it's best to avoid riding a motorcycle. Exercise caution when crossing busy streets. Keep an eye out for motorcycles travelling on footpaths.

Tap water may be unsafe to drink so choose sealed bottled water where possible. You can get bottled water easily from many shops in Vietnam.

The tropical climate in Vietnam, can attract mosquitos. Mosquito bites can carry infectious disease, such as dengue fever. Regularly use insect repellent, choose accommodation with screens or mosquito nets, and wear clothing that covers exposed skin.

Medical facilities and care in Vietnam are often below Australian standards and may lack essential medicines and supplies.

Public hospitals, particularly those outside Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, often have lower standards of medical care. Even for minor procedures, you may require a medical evacuation to a larger city.

If you experience a serious illness or injury, evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore may be necessary. This can be expensive.

Scooters and mopeds are a common way for tourists to get around cities. Motorcycle tours are also popular in Vietnam.

If you plan to ride motorcycles, mopeds, motorised scooters or quad bikes, consider purchasing an optional Adventure Pack. You can add it for an additional premium when you buy a Comprehensive or Multi-trip policy.1,4

  • You hold the appropriate class of licence (excluding learners licences) in Australia for the vehicle you’re driving, or if your Australian licence isn’t recognised in that country – a licence valid for the country you’re riding in.
  • When riding as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, moped or motorised scooter, the driver holds a valid licence.
  • You re the driver of a quad bike and you’re not carrying a pillion passenger. Note that you’re not covered if you ride as a pillion passenger on a quad bike.
  • You always wear an appropriate safety helmet.
  • You aren’t racing or riding a motorcycle, moped, motorised scooter or quad bike in a professional capacity.

Caving in Phong Nha. Rock climbing and trekking in Sapa. Or diving in the turquoise waters of the South China Sea. Vietnam is a paradise for all thrill seekers.
