Allianz senior management appointments

Sydney, 1 July 2013

Allianz is pleased to announce two new senior management appointments.

From 30 September, David Krawitz, currently Chief General Manager Workers Compensation, will take up the role as Allianz’s Chief Operating Officer.

The resulting vacancy will be filled by Ms Helen Silver, who will commence as Allianz’s Chief General Manager Workers Compensation on 16 September 2013. Most recently, Ms Silver held the role of Secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet.

David joined Allianz Australia in 2004 after an extensive career with McKinsey and Co in both Australia and the USA and, prior to that, the New York Life Insurance Company. Since joining Allianz, David has been instrumental in the development of Allianz’s Workers Compensation business, as well as playing a key influencing role for the insurance industry with governments and regulators.

Mr Peiris said, “I congratulate David on his appointment as Chief Operating Officer. David has played an important role in the implementation of Allianz’s strategy to further diversify our revenue sources to non-underwritten insurance businesses. David has played a key role in achieving this strategy having overseen Allianz’s renewed appointments as claims agents for NSW and Victoria WorkCover, the NSW Treasury Managed Fund and the South Australian Motor Accident Commission.”

As head of the Victorian Premier’s Department since 2008 and, by virtue of that role, the State Public Service, Helen has been a key adviser to the Premier of Victoria and the wider Victorian Government. Helen has worked extensively in both the Victorian and Commonwealth governments, including a period as Executive Director of Rehabilitation and Compensation at the Victorian WorkCover Authority and a First Assistant Commissioner at the Productivity Commission. Helen worked for NAB as General Manager Government Business immediately prior to her current role.

Allianz Australia Managing Director, Niran Peiris, said “I welcome the appointment of Helen Silver to head up our workers compensation business. Helen brings to the role an enormous amount of management and policy experience in both the government and private sectors and is a welcome addition to Allainz’s Senior Management Team. I look forward to working with Helen to continue the strong growth and improvement in our workers compensation business in the years ahead.”

Allianz’s current Chief Operating Officer, Garry Townsend, has signalled his intention to retire on 31 December after 44 years in the insurance industry, the last 14 of which were with Allianz Australia.

“I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to Garry for his very significant contribution to Allianz. Garry has played a key role in the growth and success of Allianz Australia since the business became a subsidiary of the global Allianz Group in 1998. Over the years, everyone at Allianz has benefited from Garry’s vast knowledge of insurance and experience in the Australian industry. Garry will continue to play a key role in the management of the business until he retires at the end of the year.”
