Luggage Insurance: Everyone has baggage!

Last updated on 9 December 2025

It’s one of the biggest complaints for travellers. Lost or delayed luggage can be a source of frustration when you’re in an unfamiliar place, unable to speak the local language or you’re exhausted from travelling.

Then there are the instances when your luggage is stolen. Or the many ways your possessions can get damaged. Travel insurance with luggage cover can help.

Here’s what you need to know about luggage cover when you travel – especially if your luggage goes missing, is damaged in transit or stolen.

When travelling, it's important to know what your insurance policy covers, particularly if your luggage is lost, damaged, or stolen. Allianz Travel Insurance Comprehensive, Domestic and Multi-trip plans include cover for luggage, personal effects, and valuables. It’s designed to cover loss or damage of your luggage and belongings during your trip.

If your luggage is accidentally damaged, stolen, or permanently lost, under the Allianz Travel Insurance Comprehensive, Domestic and Multi-trip plans we will pay the lesser of:

  • the depreciated value, taking into consideration age, wear and tear;
  • the original purchase price;
  • the sum it would cost to replace the item; or
  • the repair cost.

Cover is limited to a maximum amount for any one item. Refer to Luggage, Personal Effects & Valuables in the Product Disclosure Statement for more in-depth coverage details.

Luggage and personal effects are defined as your suitcases, trunks and similar containers (including their contents), and articles worn or carried by you. This may exclude the following items:

  • bicycle;
  • business samples or items that you intend to trade;
  • valuables;
  • snow sport equipment;
  • passport or travel documents;
  • cash, bank notes, currency notes, cheques or negotiable instruments;
  • electronic data, software or intangible asset;
  • watercraft of any type (other than surfboards);
  • furniture, furnishings, household appliances;
  • hired items; or
  • any other item which may be listed as excluded on your Certificate of Insurance.

Did you know?

Once you’ve checked out of your hotel, if you’ve left something behind and you’re unable to retrieve it, cover may be excluded under your travel insurance.

Or that if your belongings or luggage are left in a public place and you don’t take reasonable care to safeguard them, they won’t be covered.

You also may not be able to claim for sports equipment that’s damaged while you’re using it.

Items of higher value which have been placed in your check-in luggage won’t be covered either. It’s safer to pack any valuable items in your carry-on luggage and always keep them with you.

If your luggage is delayed and you need to buy essential items at your destination, you may be able to claim these expenses on your travel insurance, depending on the circumstances.

If any items of your luggage and personal effects are delayed, misdirected or misplaced by the carrier for more than 10 hours, and you need to buy essential clothing or other personal items, we will reimburse you for the reasonable costs you incur.1

However, you may not be reimbursed for these expenses if you are entitled to compensation from the carrier you were travelling with.

To support your claim, obtain written proof from the carrier responsible for your luggage and personal effects

If your items are stolen, you should report this as soon as possible to the local police or an office of the bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority you were travelling on when the theft occurred.

You should make reasonable efforts to obtain a written notice of your report. This may be the easiest way to provide evidence to support your claim.

Take precautions to keep your luggage and personal effects safe. Claims may not be paid if:

  • you leave your belongings unattended in a public location or at a distance where you are unable to prevent them from being taken.
  • you leave them with a person who is not named on your Certificate of Insurance, or who is not a relative or travel companion.
  • your travel companions fail to safeguard your luggage and personal effects.

If your luggage and personal effects are stolen from a car, we will only cover your items if the theft occurred during daylight hours. The items must have been stored in a concealed storage compartment of a locked motor vehicle. In the event of theft, forced entry must have been made.

Being prepared for loss, theft or damage can help you avoid a claim. And, if you need to make a claim, it can help the claims process run smoother.

  • Write an inventory list before you leave home
    Document what you’re bringing on your travels. Take photos of your belongings and luggage, including high-value items like phones and computers. Store your list and photos in your cloud or email so you can access this if required.
  • Pack as though your luggage will be delayed
    Even though it’s usually unlikely, assume that your luggage won’t arrive at the same time as you. Pack extra in your carry-on luggage such as fresh clothes, basic toiletries and other essentials.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings
    Watch your stuff like a hawk - or have your travelling companion watch it. Never leave anything unattended.
  • No belongings left behind
    Always check the plane, train, vehicle or hotel every time before you leave! Before checking out of accommodation stick to the same routine for packing your luggage so nothing gets left behind.

It always helps to keep as much documentation as possible for your luggage and belongings - including receipts and photos. Photos taken of your luggage and belongings at the very start of your journey can be used to support your claim for damage or loss.

For damage to luggage caused by an airline or any other transport operator report the damage to the appropriate official and ask for a written report.

If items go missing, ask for confirmation in writing from the transport operator or hotel that they do not have your items in their possession or lost property area.

Yes - when buying a Comprehensive, Domestic or Multi-trip travel insurance policy, for an additional premium you have the option of increasing item limits if your items are of a higher value than what might otherwise be covered by your policy.1 This might include items such as mobile phones, personal computers, cameras, and jewellery.

When you’re travelling, your luggage is your portable home away from home. Keep it close, keep it safe and if something happens - your travel insurance for luggage is designed to help cover the costs.

Be happy knowing you’ve done all you can to prepare for the possibility of making a claim.
