Allianz warns Australians to safeguard their keys after nationwide car theft spike

5 December 2025

Car thefts are surging across Australia, with new Allianz motor claims data revealing a 24% increase over the past five years1. With many incidents involving thieves using keys left in handbags, hallways, or unlocked vehicles, Allianz is urging Australians to avoid everyday habits turning into costly mistakes.

“Despite the rise in high-tech methods such as onboard diagnostic port manipulation and relay attacks where thieves boost the signal from a key fob inside the home, the reality is many cars continue to be  stolen with the owners’ own keys,” says Chris Wood, Allianz’s Emerging Risks Manager.

“Thieves look for easy targets, and our motor claims data tells us that unattended vehicles, unlocked cars and distractions, like leaving keys in the car while paying for petrol, provide opportunities for thieves to strike.”

Car theft is rising nationwide, and Victoria continues to be the epicentre, recording the highest increase in thefts with a 38.6% year-on-year surge1. Alarmingly, 85.6% of incidents occurred in metro areas, highlighting the vulnerability of urban environments1.

Allianz claims data reveals the top vehicles targeted by thieves is the 2017 Toyota Hilux, accounting for 15% of all theft claims, followed by the 2017 and 2019 Ford Ranger (both at 11%) and the 2016 Ford Ranger (10%)1. These popular utility vehicles are often targeted due to their high resale value and widespread use. Vehicle age is also a major factor, with vehicles over five years old most commonly stolen (65.2% of thefts), compared to vehicles under three years old (21.7% of thefts)1.

“Car theft is devastating, but prevention doesn’t have to be expensive,” says Wood. “Small, proactive steps can make a big difference. Whether it’s using a steering wheel lock, installing an OBD port protector, or simply being mindful of where you leave your keys, these measures can dramatically reduce your risk. It’s about turning everyday habits into smarter, safer choices."

To help Aussies deter thieves, Allianz recommends five practical, low-cost prevention tips:

  • Never leave your keys in the car, always take them with you and store them away from entry points like the front door.
  • Never leave your car running unattended, even for a quick errand in a ‘safe’ area.
  • Invest in a steering wheel lock; a visible, old-school deterrent that can make thieves think twice.
  • Park in well-lit areas or secure garages, especially overnight, to reduce risk.
  • Install an onboard diagnostic port lock – a small device that helps block tech-based theft attempts.
