Fun runs to motivate you

Fun runs are designed to be just that - fun! They're social, as competitive as you want, and suitable for most ages and abilities. We look at popular fitness events held around Australia.

A fun run can be the path to achieving your new personal best, motivation to boost your fitness, or a fun weekend morning activity for you and the family. Whatever your motivation, there are some great fun runs held across the country that are big on participation and small on competition.

The Sun-Herald City2Surf

This annual run held in August follows a 14km course from Sydney's CBD to iconic Bondi Beach. The City2Surf has become a Sydney institution: 2013 marked 42 years of the City2Surf and there have been more than 1.5 million participants since its beginningi. Anyone of any age or ability can registerii, with many participants running the race to raise money for charity. Last year over $4 million was raised for various charities by participants of the City2Surfiii.

The Age Run Melbourne

The Age Run Melbourne is held annually each July. In 2012 and 2013 the event raised more than $1.9 million and $1.7 million respectively for various charitiesiv. Catering for all ages and fitness levels, adults can sign up to do 5km, 10km or the half marathon, while kids can participate in a superheroes-themed 3km coursev. The courses run through the city and along the banks of the Yarra Rivervi.

Unconventional fun runs

Sixteen cities across Australia are hosting the Swisse Color Run this year. Participants dress in white, and along the 5km course there are five different "colour" stations. At each station, runners get covered in non-toxic, coloured dust so that by the finish line, every participant is covered in a rainbow of colour! Fun for all ages, make the most of the Color Run by running with a group of friends or familyvii.

Not for the faint-hearted and certainly not suitable for kids, Tough Mudder is 20km of dirt, pain and sweat. Designed by the British Special Forces (the UK's military elite), the course is about strength, fitness and - you guessed it - mud! This fitness event is so entertaining that non-participants can buy tickets to watch competitors tough it out on the course. Tough Mudder has been held in four locations across Australia in 2013 (Sydney, Melbourne, Sunshine Coast and Perth)viii and will be held again next year.

With the slogan "chase down the party"ix, the Glow Run is an after-dark, neon fitness fantasy. The 5km night-time run is held across several Australian cities, and is 'more about dancing than jogging'. Each kilometre is marked with a dance party, complete with black-lit dance floor and DJ set. Wear as much neon and bring as many glowsticks as possible, soak up the good vibes, and experience a very different type of fun run!

Signing up for a fun run can be just the fitness motivation you’re looking for.

From the competitive to the unconventional, fun runs are happening across Australia all year round. Participating can be fun on the day, and training can be a great way to get fit, whether it's by yourself, with friends, or as a family. So do your bit to combat couch potato habits: sign up for a fun run, pull on your runners, and get training!

Frequent exercise is essential for good health and can reduce your risk of contracting serious lifestyle diseases or illnesses. Choosing to be active is part and parcel of preparing for your future well-being, and goes together with planning for your family's financial security.

Getting life insurance when you're fit and healthy can help you and your family to avoid financial distress in the event of unexpected ill health, disability or death.
