Insure your valuables with optional Portable Contents cover

After many years of cancelled plans, we have become more attached to our valuable items and are used to having them at our fingertips. This means many of us don’t feel comfortable leaving our valuable items at home while we’re away on holiday. Packing the latest technology and our jewellery can mean the items in our suitcases cost more than the holiday itself.

While we can be tempted to take our valuable items with us, travelling with more items than we need can lead to more stress while we’re away. Holidaying with your items means they’re at risk of being damaged, lost or stolen.

To help you get organised, we’ve partnered with small business owner and mum of three Lisa Wipfli to provide tips on how to prepare for your next holiday.

No matter how prepared you are, there’s always a little bit of madness ahead of going on holidays. From the kids’ tablets to multiple outfit options, these basic steps can help you plan ahead and avoid the last-minute scramble to get it all together.

Watch Lisa’s tips for how to prepare for a stress-free holiday.

Although worried about their valuables, many people don’t have a plan in place to insure them on holiday.
We encourage people to consider the level of insurance cover they have before going away on holidays.
The majority of people advised their holiday rental, travel provider or the police, but not their insurer.

Lisa Wipfli has provided these tips to help prepare for your next holiday:

  • Make a list – and stick to it
Packing lists are a great way to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything and that you’re not overpacking. While it can be tempting to throw in the odd item, make sure you stick to your list to avoid bringing more than you actually need on holiday.
  • Arrange your belongings into compartments
Whether you’re heading on a road trip or hitting the runway, keeping track of your belongings on holiday can be difficult. When it comes to travelling with high-value portables, pack them in separate compartments so you know where they are in your luggage. For example, pack all technology (kids’ tablets, video games) in one spot and keep your medical kits and supplements together in another part. This makes your valuables easy to find.
  • Do an insurance policy health check
Before you head out, it’s a good idea to check your insurance policy to make sure your valuables are insured when you’re at home or on the road.
  • Pack all dirty items in one suitcase
While on holiday, collate all the dirty items into one suitcase. When you return home, it makes it so much simpler to unpack and not have to rummage through multiple bags to locate your valuables over the dirty items.

Home Contents Insurance covers the belongings you have at your insured address: from your furniture, carpet and appliances to your BBQ and even your clothes.

Optional covers such as Portable Contents and Accidental Damage can be added to Home Contents Insurance to make sure the items most important to you are covered no matter where you are in Australia.

Consider our Home Contents Insurance and the available optional covers to decide what best suits your needs.

It’s important to know what you’re covered for when you’re at home and on the road. Before going on holidays, check your insurance policy to make sure your most important valuables are covered.

Our simple five-step check-in is available to all policyholders and helps you to review your excess, cover and payment frequency, making changes where we can to help support you.

When you take a break, it’s important to truly switch off. We’ve put together our top tips on how to feel at ease knowing your valuables are covered when you’re on holiday:
  • Reflect on what you're packing
Try to limit the number of items you take on holiday. Give yourself time to reflect on your packing list and decide if an item is absolutely essential. For example, if you’re going on a relaxing weekend away, consider leaving your tech gadgets (such as your work computer) at home.
  • Protect your valuables
If you’re travelling with your high-value items, consider insuring them so you can holiday with confidence. It’s as easy as contacting us to find out what is covered under your current Allianz Home Insurance policy and consider if you might need optional covers such as Portable Contents Cover and/or Accidental Damage Cover.
  • Keep your valuables in a safe place at home
If you’re planning to be away from home, consider placing your high-value items in a safe.
  • Store your valuables safely on holiday
If you’re travelling with your valuables, find a safe spot within your holiday room or rental to store them when you’re not carrying them with you. It’s a good idea to keep valuables out of plain sight, for example storing them in the room safe or safely locked in your luggage.
  • Specify more expensive portable items
Optional Portable Contents Cover usually covers items you carry with you, such as your handbag, wallet, jewellery and instruments up to a certain claim or item limit. You may need to specify other items such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones to make sure they’re listed under your policy and covered for their full value.
  • Make a claim
If you’re belongings are damaged, lost or stolen, and they’re covered under your insurance policy, make sure you make a claim.

  • Optional Accidental Damage – By adding this option, we’ll cover any accidental damage or loss to your content items (within the set limits) at your home or anywhere in Australia for up to 90 continuous days.
  • Optional Portable Contents – choose from two cover types: listed and unlisted contents. A great option for items you have on you or carry with you away from your home.
  • Quick and easy claims process – Make a claim online 24/7 or call 13 10 13.
