Get backyard sports ready this summer

Check your home insurance before the game begins

After years of closed borders, friends and families are looking forward to spending the summer holidays together more than ever. Whether it’s cricket with cousins, water polo with mates, or footy with Nana, nothing is more Australian than backyard sports.

However, accidental damages and mishaps can happen if you’re not well prepared. To help you get backyard sports ready, we’ve partnered with Australian sporting icon, Mat Rogers. Mat has shared his tips on how to make your home the best backyard sports stadium it can be – while trying to avoid any accidents or damages.

Watch Mat’s tips for how to prepare for the best backyard sports season yet.

Many people surveyed are worried about damage to their home during the holiday season
Despite being concerned about damage to their home, many people surveyed don’t have Home and Contents Insurance
Most people surveyed haven’t taken out optional Accidental Damage cover on items in their home
According to research commissioned by Allianz Australia and conducted by PureProfile in accordance with the ISO 20252:2019 standard. The survey is a nationally representative sample of 1,005 Australians and was carried out online between 25 October and 27 October 2022.

  • Check your angles: No matter what sport you’ve chosen, you’ll need a place to play. To try to avoid accidents or mishaps, make sure windows (yours and your neighbours’) are out of the way of balls, bats, or sticks. Watch out for other fragile objects that could become damaged, and if they’re within range, move them - or your game - to a safer location.
  • Gear up: After a wet few months in much of Australia, it’s important to check gear like kneepads, helmets, bats and inflatables that may have been exposed to the elements for any mould. Give them a good clean prior to the game if needed.
  • Ready rain or shine: When the sun does shine, hats, sunnies and sunscreen are essential. However, always keep that wet weather gear ready in case of a sudden weather turn. If it does get muddy, set up a cleaning station outside to wipe everything down, before someone treads mud all over the carpet or slips on the tiles.
  • Sort out crowd control: Keep any little ones out of harm’s way by setting up an area where they can be part of the fun safely. If they’re old enough to understand, explain the rules with an emphasis on safety.
  • Provide hydration and energy: A team wins or loses on its stomach, so healthy snacks are essential for game time. Sliced oranges are a perfect refresher on hot summer days, and of course, keep plenty of water available at all times.
  • Prepare your mascot: Boost team spirit by involving your all-important family pet as your mascot.

Home Building and Home Contents Insurance provide cover in the event something happens to your home or your belongings inside the property.

Home Building Insurance can help cover the loss or damage to the physical structures that make up your home building. From the house itself, to your garage, fences, paved driveways, and even fixtures like hot water systems, ducted air conditioners and more.

Home Contents Insurance covers your belongings at your insured address: from your furniture, carpet and appliances to your BBQ and even your clothes.

Accidental Damage is an optional cover that you can add to your Home Insurance. It covers you for accidental damage caused by sudden, unforeseen, or unintended events, not just the specified insured events. This might include accidentally spilling red wine on the couch or breaking the back fence during any mishaps.

Consider our Home Building and Contents Insurance and the available optional covers to decide what best suits your needs.

It’s important to understand what you’re covered for within your home. Ahead of this backyard sports season, check your insurance policy to make sure you have the cover you need.

Our simple five-step check-in is available to all policyholders and helps you to review your excess, cover and payment frequency, making changes where we can to help support you.

We understand how important spending time with loved ones is over the summer holidays. Therefore, we’ve put together our top tips to help you get backyard sports ready with confidence:

Before you kick off or take the first wicket, check what is and isn’t covered as part of your Home Building and Contents Insurance. You may also consider taking out Accidental Damage Cover to cover your home for sudden, unforeseen and unintended events.

To prevent more severe issues and keep your home well-maintained, address any minor damage to your home or its contents, such as a rotting fence or chipped glass, as soon as possible.

If your home or its contents are damaged, and they’re covered under your insurance policy, make sure you make a claim.
  • Home Building Insurance  - This protects the physical structures that make up your home building.
  • Home Contents Insurance  - This covers the belongings you have at your insured address: from your furniture, carpet and appliances to your BBQ.
