What are the rules for drivers aged 75 and older?
If you have turned 75 during this time, your doctor will help you complete part 2 of the form. It is worthwhile seeing your doctor if you have:
- developed a permanent or long-term medical condition that is likely to impact your ability to drive safely
- an existing permanent or long-term medical condition that is likely to impact your ability to drive safely
- or, if you are applying or renewing your driver licence and are over the age of 75.
During your visit with a doctor or health professional, they may recommend that a licence condition is imposed or that the class of your licence is downgraded. This will be based on any medical conditions you may have.
What happens when I turn 75?
Once you have your 75th birthday, you are required by law to have an annual medical assessment with your doctor to continue driving. The medical certificate will be valid for 13 months, this additional month will give you some extra time to complete your medical assessment for the next year. In some cases, your doctor may request that you see them more frequently and will issue you a shorter expiry date on your medical certificate.
You will receive a reminder 6 weeks before your certificate is due to expire, this date will likely be different to the expiry date on your driver licence.
