In 2011 the average monthly mortgage repayment in Hobart was $1430, compared with $975 in 2006. Where you buy also makes a difference: while the average 2011 repayment in Adelaide was $1545, in Sydney it was $21672-16.

House prices on the rise

Interest rates are low, but at the same time the mean value of Australian dwellings has steadily increased over the past two decades17. In 2011-12 dollars, the mean value of a dwelling in 1995-96 was $196,000. In 2011-12 it was $393,000.

House or apartment?

Between 2008 and 2013, there was a 22 per cent total increase in the number of new apartments and townhouses being built19. Construction of new apartment buildings in Australia is booming and in 2014 accounted for 4 in every 10 new building projects20. The 2011 Census data shows that 75.6 per cent of Australians are living in separate houses compared with 13.6 per cent who live in apartments, units or flats and 10 per cent in semi-detached row or terrace houses21.

Once you've signed on the dotted line and moved in, what will your weekly cost of living be? If you have a mortgage and live in Perth, the average weekly cost of owning a home was $466 in 2011-12, versus $435 in Melbourne22-25.
