Vanessa

Customer Service Specialist

With several years of experience in insurance customer support, Vanessa worried that customers didn’t get the most out of their insurance simply because they didn’t understand their policies well enough. She found Allianz to be the first place that empowered her to act on this concern and get involved in improving this for customers.

Vanessa’s manager recognised her interest and within a few months of joining Allianz, asked her to join a project team contacting customers about a policy change. "I was finally able to help educate customers to make the best choice."

"I was excited by the opportunity and just a little proud they’d noticed me! I learned a lot from the experience, including that Allianz leaders really listen and act on employee ideas and suggestions. I see the evidence in changes around me."

Richard

Claims Manager

Coming from a hospitality background, Richard expected another ‘typical’ customer service job when he first joined Allianz as a Claims Officer. He was surprised at the variety and complexity in his role as well as the different career paths on offer.

"I hadn’t realised the level of judgement required to apply insurance legislation, the high level of autonomy given to me to do this, or the combination of life skills and technical skills needed to do it well."

"At Allianz, he discovered a team that genuinely wanted him to do well and was prepared to support his growth and his pursuit of a broader insurance career path. “I’ve found that every type of insurance is very different and that really changes what and how you do your job."

"What I found different here was the consistent approach that people leaders have. They all genuinely believe in doing the right thing by their people and our customers. They look after their teams, and trust them to get the job done. This gives me confidence to try out new opportunities and also gives me a great template to grow as a leader myself – one that motivates me to take pride in my people and our work."

Mike

Strategic Account Manager

For the past ten years, Mike has successfully moved between sales, account management and marketing roles with Allianz. The encouragement he’s been given to explore an interesting career path has provided him with a valuable perspective of our business and inspired him to continuously innovate.

He believes that the transparency shown by his managers and colleagues has created a level of trust that has empowered him to speak up and pursue new ideas. Many organisations talk about innovation but here Mike feels he is able to practice it day to day.

"Just a few weeks into one new role, I felt we could help our clients better understand our products by significantly changing our pattern of coaching visits. It was a big change to the team’s operating rhythm, but the new way of working that I proposed really deepened our relationships with clients."

"My manager listened, and I had support to pursue my idea even though I was so new to the team. A sales and marketing career is always interesting, but few things can compete with the thrill of coming up with new ways of doing things to help our customers."

Jenita

General Manager Research

Jenita realised that in many organisations, professionals can get pigeon-holed into one career path. Her choice not to be was supported by Allianz in a bigger way than she expected.

Her first exploration away from her actuarial beginnings was into product management. The change in focus and addition of people management responsibilities made it a real challenge.

"What made this possible was the combination of on-the-job support from my managers with situational coaching, formal leadership development programs, and the trust my new team had in my abilities."

Jenita’s next exploration was into a General Manager role well out of her original business area where she’s now responsible for pricing a $4 billion portfolio. "This was a huge leap for me, but my managers took the time to know me, recognise my potential and give me a chance."

"The high-performance culture here is important because you know when you’re pursuing opportunities like these, that your team will have the capability to support you. Capabilities are transferable, and just as I’ve succeeded in leaving my comfort zone, I can see we’re attracting more people from non-insurance backgrounds who are succeeding in leaving theirs."

"If you want to influence your organisation’s direction, be creative and have a willingness to do something different, this is a great place to be."

Deborah

Manager Statutory Reporting

Deborah believes that the most interesting finance roles are those where you can get involved in projects outside of your core role to stretch yourself and build new capabilities. The renewal strategy Allianz is focussed on, has provided her the perfect home to do this.

"There is never a dull moment here. There is always something going on: projects where you can learn a lot, prove yourself and discover new opportunities."

Deborah knows the open and supportive nature of Allianz people is an important part of this. She feels comfortable asking any kind of question because she knows she won’t be judged. A good example is the project team she is part of now, which is responsible for developing and presenting future property options to leadership.

"We’re identifying the future needs of our business and our people and planning how we’ll work in the future. It’s not every day that you can influence the environment and work patterns of thousands of your colleagues into the future. It’s a long way from my core role in financial reporting but there’s something very satisfying about creating that legacy."

to own their decisions
Shona

Finance Actuary

When starting her career as an Actuary, Shona didn’t only want to be challenged technically. She wanted to work with an organisation that would empower her to add value to its operations and performance. Allianz gave her broad exposure in the UK, working with Product Managers to analyse the market and identify growth opportunities.

"My skills were well used, and I could see from the growth in our business that I added value. It also gave me a practical understanding of the business and a better understanding of how my skills could add value."

Shona was supported by Allianz in her decision to return to Australia, where she is now responsible for monthly valuation of liabilities. The size and importance of that number to the business and that her audience includes the CEO and CFO, could have been intimidating for anyone - but not Shona.

"It’s not an area for uncertainty and I really need to own the data and the presentation approach. I think the difference for me is in the openness and support of everyone I draw information from, at every level across the organisation - and of course the confidence that my manager, the CEO and CFO have in me."

"Having the conviction to do what I think is right, exposes me to amazing learning opportunities early in my career."

Balaji

IT Systems Manager

Balaji found life in information technology to be too often focused on delivering or fixing what already existed, with rarely any time left for the really satisfying job of improving things.

At Allianz though, that’s what he’s been given a licence to do.

"I talk to people about how they use our systems and I use my technology background to understand system opportunities. I’m empowered to remove bottlenecks and frustrations, simplify things for our users, and improve the quality of information for our people to make better business decisions."

"While Allianz’s desire to improve, innovate and simplify has created an amazing role for me, anyone here can put up ideas to our innovation hub or their team to experience the same satisfaction. It’s something that’s encouraged and rewarded at every level."

Kristen

Senior Risk & Compliance Officer

Graduating with a double degree in law and medical science, Kristen knew she wanted to apply her talents in a way that made a tangible difference to others. She hoped that the huge changes in the insurance sector would stretch her technically. She also wanted to be part of a global brand focused on giving individuals and businesses the confidence to pursue their aspirations, and this would give her work meaning.

She hasn’t been disappointed.

"What I’ve been empowered to do in our Workers Compensation business is amazing. We have systems and processes in place to help customers get back on their feet following a tragedy. Even though I’m only a couple of years out of university, colleagues at all levels have listened to me and supported my ideas to make things better."

"I can see the difference I’ve already been able to make to customers and our people."

Agnes

to create order
Agnes

Executive Assistant

Agnes knows that the leaders she has worked with at Allianz have always been busy, but that they’ve always appreciated her role in creating the order that supports them to do their best work. It’s an attitude that’s also consistent right across the organisation, with people genuinely appreciating and acknowledging the work and efforts of their colleagues.

"A big reason I’ve stayed at Allianz for over 14 years, with three different executives, is the support and respect people here show each other. People here work hard and are dedicated but they look out for each other and really care about your wellbeing."

"Allianz leaders grow their people and are always open in their conversations with you. And while there’s a diverse group of people here, from so many different backgrounds and cultures, they’re all friendly and open, and want to know about you."

"I’m able to create the order that makes a difference and enjoy great professional and personal relationships with not only my leader and their team, but with colleagues right across the organisation."
