We’ve compiled some tips to help you travel safe on your New Zealand trip.

Weather conditions in New Zealand can change rapidly. Be prepared for cold, wet weather if you plan to walk in National Parks, whatever the time of year.

New Zealand often experiences unpredictable weather, including snowstorms and heavy rain that can cause flooding.

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are also common.

Overseas drivers can underestimate the challenge of driving safely outside of urban areas. Rural roads and highways can be deceptively dangerous. Look out for one lane bridges, sheep or cattle blocking your path and narrow, windy, and sometimes icy roads.

Visiting New Zealand’s ski fields is a must-do activity for many visitors. Snow sports are well-known for causing unexpected accidents for beginners and experts alike. Accidents can be minimised by following a few basic rules:

  • Know your ability. Start easy, be able to stop and avoid other people.
  • People below you have right of way
  •  Obey signage
  •  Look before you leap
  •  Always ensure people know where you are
  •  Secure your equipment when not in use

New Zealand is widely known as an adventure destination. From bungee jumping to zorbing, river tubing and jet boating. There’s no shortage of things to get your heart racing.

Our travel insurance policies automatically cover some activities. If your trip to New Zealand involves action that is not automatically covered, consider purchasing an optional Adventure Pack for an additional premium when you buy an Allianz Comprehensive or Multi-trip policy.1,4

Māori are the Indigenous people to New Zealand. Their culture is central to New Zealand’s identity. Visiting a Māori cultural site during your trip is worth your while, but you may need permission to enter. If you don’t get the chance, there are a few Māori museums across the country. Here you can explore the Māori culture, art heritage, and fascinating history.

The Southern Alps is a mountain range extending much of the length of New Zealand’s South Island. There are approximately 19 ski locations across the Southern Alps. In addition, there are hundreds of glaciers, rivers of blue-green, fjords, and scenic waterfalls to explore.

To be covered for skiing or other snow activities in New Zealand, consider purchasing an optional Snow Pack for an additional premium when you buy an Allianz Comprehensive or Multi-trip policy.1,4

In addition, travel insurance can cover for unexpected events that may disrupt your trip such as cancellations, lost luggage, or travel delays.

You can compare Allianz Travel Insurance plans to determine which product best suits your needs.
