Renters insurance provides contents insurance for renters and is designed to help cover the cost of loss or damage to protect your contents at your rental premises as a result of an insured event. Renters insurance can provide cover for your furniture and appliances to electrical goods and your BBQ, and even clothes, shoes and handbags. Renters insurance covers the cost of repair or replacement of your contents when loss or damage is caused by break-ins, fires, natural events such as storms and bushfire5, impact damage such as a fallen tree, as well as accidental breakage of glass and more.

What Does Renters Insurance Cover?
This is a summary only of some of the features available on Allianz Home Insurance. Legal Liability Cover

Up to $20m legal liability cover.

Provides cover for if you are found liable to pay compensation to someone because you have accidently injured them or damaged their property during the period of insurance.

Alternative Accommodation

If your home contents are damaged by an insured event during the period of insurance to such an extent that your home can’t be lived in, we’ll pay for temporary accommodation costs for you and your pets for up to 12 months.4

Emergency Contents Storage

If your home can’t be lived in as a result of damage by an insured event, we will reimburse the reasonable costs to move and store your undamaged contents for the time necessary to repair or rebuild your dwelling, or until you find alternative accommodation, for a maximum of 12 months.

The maximum we will pay is the balance of your contents sum insured, after we have paid any claim for damage to your contents.

Additional Cover Benefits

  • Moving house cover – If you have Contents cover and you are moving house, we'll cover your contents both at your new and old address for up to 14 days after you first start to move. However, we will not cover your contents while they are in transit.
  • Debris removal – Covers the reasonable costs to remove your damaged or destroyed contents by an insured event. Covers up to 10% of the contents sum insured.
  • Vet costs - If you have insured your contents and your cat or dog is injured in a road accident, we will pay up to $500 in any one period of insurance for related veterinary expenses. No excess applies.
  • Food or medicine spoilage - If your fridge or freezer breaks down and you lose perishable food or medicine we'll pay for them to be replaced. If the spoilage is due to a natural disaster, the most we’ll pay is $500.

Portable Contents

Covers loss or damage to your portable items (such as wallets, glasses, jewellery, cameras and mobile phones6) caused by theft or an accident Australia-wide or anywhere in the world when you are temporarily outside Australia for up to 120 days.

There are two cover types to choose from - listed and unlisted contents.

Flood

Covers you for loss or damage to your contents caused by flood and certain flood-related events. Optional flood cover may not be available in some areas.

Note: We do not provide cover for any loss of or damage to your property caused by cyclone, flood, grassfire and bushfires during the first 72 hours after you first take out or increase the cover under the policy.

Accidental Damage

Covers you for accidental damage caused by sudden, unforeseen and unintended events, not just the specified insured events. This option automatically includes Motor Burnout.

Motor Burnout

Covers you if an electrical current damages your domestic household electrical motors, such as your fridge, freezer or washing machine, up to 10 years old.

    • the type of property you’re insuring
    • the amount and type of cover you require
    • any other people also insured under the policy
    • the relevant claims history of the people being insured
    • the likelihood of a claim being made on your policy.
  • Any discounts that may apply.
  • Any compulsory government charges such as Stamp Duty and GST.
  • Fire Services Levy if they apply to the State or Territory where your home is located.
  • Any other charges we tell you of.
  • The excess you choose.

Yes, we can offer insurance for up to 3 unrelated people living in the home. Allianz Renters insurance will cover contents for up to 3 housemates, as long as they are named on the policy as an insured policy holder.
If you’re a renter or tenant, and you want to be covered for the cost of repairing or replacing your contents (e.g. furniture, whitegoods, electrical appliances and clothing) then you may want to take out renters insurance. Here’s a list of some of the things that’s not included under Allianz Contents cover:
  • Does not cover more than three unrelated persons living in your home
  • Certain items while in use - This includes loss or damage to the following items while they are being used: sporting equipment, bicycles and watercraft.
  • Loss or damage caused by flooding - unless you have added the flood cover option to your policy, where available.
  • Some high value items may only be covered up to a certain specified limit unless you provide details and list the item on your policy

If you take out Contents insurance, here’s how it can work if you suffer an insured loss:
  • If the house or apartment you live in burns down and destroys all your contents within it - With adequate sums insured under Renters Contents cover, you could replace your insured contents.
  • If a thief enters your house or apartment and steals your contents - You can replace the items that were stolen under your Contents insurance.
  • If, while rearranging your furniture, you accidentally drop your book shelf on your glass coffee table, and the glass breaks - As your Allianz Contents insurance covers accidental breakage of glass that forms part of your contents in your home (other than those contents that are excluded such as televisions – see the PDS). If you take out optional accidental damage cover, we will repair or replace the whole coffee table including the glass.
