Under the sink: How to prevent flexi-hose bursts

Last updated on 14 July, 2026
If you don't know what a flexi-hose is, you're not alone. These small connectors hide under sinks and behind appliances in almost every Australian home. Most people don’t notice them unless something goes wrong – and if they fail, they can cause flooding fast.
In this article, you’ll learn:

First, watch our Home Safety Specialist, Nicole, show you what flexi-hoses look like and where to find them.

Hi, I’m Nicole from Allianz.

Check this out: a flexi-hose. Look how how rusty that is!

They’re cheap, hidden, and when they burst, it’s like a fire hydrant going off.

You’re going to want to replace that.

Allianz Prevention helps you catch common issues before they become problems.

Flexi-hoses may be small, but they play a big role in your home. They’re made from rubber tubing wrapped in braided steel, which makes them flexible. Their flexibility makes them ideal for connecting taps, toilets, dishwashers, and hot water systems in tight spaces.

Despite their small size, flexi-hoses can cause big problems if they fail. When a flexi-hose bursts, it can release hundreds of litres of water per minute. The Allianz Home Care Report (PDF 1.9 MB) states water damage is one of the most common and expensive claim types. A burst flexi-hose can cause up to $30,000 in damage if it fails while you’re away. In our Home Health Check trial, one in five flexi-hoses showed signs of rust or damage.

A new flexi-hose typically costs around $20, plus plumbing costs, but the cost of a burst hose is much higher. Costs may include replacing flooring, furniture, and belongings, depending on your cover. If you can’t live in your home, you may also need temporary accommodation while everything dries out and repairs are done.

It’s worth knowing that most insurance policies don’t cover damage caused by wear and tear, or lack of maintenance. That’s why regular home checks, including your flexi-hoses, are so important.

To check what's covered and excluded in your Home and Contents Insurancesee your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

The good news is that ageing flexi-hoses often show signs of damage before they burst. Look out for:

Rust on the steel braiding may mean the inner rubber hose is leaking. This can worsen quickly.

If the braiding pushes outward, the rubber inside has weakened. That's a sign the hose could burst soon.

Loose or broken steel strands mean the flexi-hose is failing. Call a licensed plumber to replace it as soon as possible.

Sharp angles create pressure points that weaken the hose over time.
