Mould thrives in damp, humid places with poor ventilation. It’s common in bathrooms, which often stay steamy and lack good airflow. Mould in grouting may suggest a leak or faulty plumbing, according to the Australian Government 2023 Biotoxins report (PDF, 2.9 MB). It can also appear where there simply isn’t enough fresh air.

Kitchens and even living rooms can also create the right conditions for mould. For example, unflued gas heaters produce water vapour, which helps mould grow.

Elsewhere in the home, mould on the ceiling may be a sign of a roof leak or blocked gutters. Mould on the walls can point to rising damp, where moisture moves up through the brickwork from the ground.

Not all mould is easy to see. It can grow under carpets and behind furniture. If you notice a musty smell in one area, that may be a sign of hidden mould.

Climate plays a big role in mould growth. Wetter, more humid areas are at higher risk. La Niña can also lead to more mould because it brings increased rainfall and moisture.

A survey by Airtasker during the 2025 La Niña phase found Australia’s ‘most mouldy region’ was Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Next on the list were Cairns and Inner Sydney City.

There are many cleaning products that can tackle mould. Always follow the instructions and safety advice, such as wearing protective gloves.

If you prefer a chemical-free option, try undiluted vinegar or baking soda mixed with water. Spray it onto the affected area, scrub, rinse, and let the area dry completely.

Whatever you use, test it on a small area first. You may need more than one treatment to remove the mould completely.

Soft furnishings, like carpets and curtains, can be harder to clean. You may need a professional cleaner. If that doesn’t work, replacing the item might be the safest option.

Even if you remove mould, it can return unless you reduce the moisture that caused it. Improving ventilation often helps. This can be as simple as opening a window or installing an exhaust fan.

If it’s difficult to improve ventilation, consider a portable dehumidifier. Some models also remove dust from the air, which may help people with allergies. Chemical moisture absorbers can also work well in small spaces such as cupboards.

It’s important to fix any leaks or blocked gutters that may be adding moisture to your home. If you think rising damp is an issue, you can install wall vents to improve sub-floor airflow. To make sure you’re tackling the problem properly, it’s best to get professional advice.
