At Allianz, we know your home is more than just a building – it’s where life happens. Our Home Insurance is there to support you through unexpected insured events, like storms,1 fire,1 or theft. We care about the things that matter to you. So, we want to help you prepare as best you can for surprises that could impact your home and lifestyle.

Spring is the season of new growth, with flowers in bloom and, usually, plenty of rain. Your home may also need to be ready for storms and hail. The weather may be unpredictable, but there are things you can do to prepare as much as you can.

Number 1

Over time, wet weather and moisture can build up and affect your home's foundations, potentially causing issues. Here’s what to look out for.

  • Are there cracks in foundations or signs of shifting? Moisture may make these worse.
  • Are there any gaps or cracks in your exterior walls? If so, seal them promptly with waterproof sealant.
  • If you’re not sure, call a reputable builder to get their professional opinion.
Number 2

Trees and shrubs add beauty to most outdoor spaces, but some may cause damage during stormy weather.

  • Inspect trees for branches that are dead or diseased and trim them back.
  • Trim any overhanging branches to keep them away from your roof and windows.
  • To prune or remove large trees or high branches safely, hire a professional gardener or tree surgeon.
Number 3

Leaks can sneak up on you, causing water damage before you know it. Your roof and gutters may be key sources of leaks, so it’s worth checking them.

  • Are there any damaged or missing roof tiles? Consider calling a professional roofer to check them and make repairs where necessary.
  • Are the gutters clear? You might consider adding gutter guards.
  • Are the downspouts draining water away from your building? Call a professional to fix them, if needed.
Number 4

If you live in a flood-prone area, spring rain can be a challenge although there are a few steps you can take.

  • Make sure your drains are clear of debris, so water flows away easily.
  • If you have a basement that’s likely to flood, consider installing a sump pump there.
  • Keep important papers in waterproof containers or store them digitally.
  • In extreme weather, we’re here for you. Visit our Extreme weather support page

Number 5

Drafts and water leaks can be a nuisance, making you uncomfortable in your own home. The good news is that some are easy to fix.

  • Check the seals around windows and doors and replace any worn weather stripping.
  • This simple task may also improve your home's energy efficiency.
Number 6

Ready to enjoy sunny Sundays on the deck? Almost, but make sure you always put safety first. Remember that wear and tear, like rotten wooden decking, isn’t usually covered by home insurance.

  • Inspect decks, patios, and walkways for any weather damage or wear and tear.
  • Repair any issues promptly so you and your family have a safe outdoor space to enjoy.
Number 7

Fire safety is a year-round concern, and it’s a good idea to carry out checks before summer temperatures soar.

  • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, replacing batteries as needed.
  • Clear away any flammable debris from around your home.
  • Be aware of potential fire hazards, such as open flames on candles, gas hobs or fire pits. Never leave them unattended.
  • Create a fire escape plan, and make sure your whole family know what to do.
Number 8

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports break-ins rose from 1.8% in 2022-23 to 2.1% in 2023-24. Before you head off on summer trips, it’s a good idea to make sure your home is secure.

  • Thinking about upgrading your home security system? Look into costs and set the installation date, if needed.
  • Consider installing motion-sensor lights to help keep unwanted visitors away.
  • In warmer months, make sure you can lock windows and doors, especially when you’re out.
  • A lockable screen door may also be a wise choice for added security.

Spring is a time for renewal, when nature thrives. With a little maintenance, your home can thrive too. Checking your property regularly may save you from costly repairs later on.

It’s also worth thinking about your home security sooner rather than later. A secure home keeps you, your family, and your belongings safe and sound.
