Olympic Ambassadors share those who spark their confidence

Last updated on July 29, 2021
It’s been 5 years in the making but the Olympic Games are here! The past 18 months sure haven't been easy for our athletes, the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games last year brought heartbreak and uncertainty for many. But behind every athlete there's someone lifting them up, giving them that extra nudge when they need it, cheering them on and supporting them. There's someone who sparks their confidence.

Research commissioned by Allianz Australia on the perceptions of confidence reports that 70% of Australians say the support of friends and family is key to individual confidence.

Georgia Ridler, Head Sport Psychologist to the Australian Olympic Team, says the people behind the scenes are a key contributor to our outlook and successes. “For high performing athletes it is often the people in the background that spark their confidence, and this is no different for everyday Australians. Everyone has their own fears and vulnerabilities, but our friends, family, partners, mentors, colleagues and teammates encourage us to believe in our own abilities and have hope for the future.”

In the short videos below our Allianz Olympic Ambassadors share with us the special people in their lives that #SparkConfidence, and have helped them continue on their journey to reach the pinnacle of their sport.

Throughout her career swimmer and 5-time Olympic medal winner, Cate Campbell OAM, has looked to her mum for a sense of confidence. In all the ups and downs in the lead up to Tokyo 2020 it has been no different.

In 2015, champion Australian surfer Owen Wright suffered a traumatic brain injury. He had to relearn how to walk, and surf. This year he’ll be competing in the first Olympic Games to include surfing. Watch our YouTube clip to hear Owen talk about the support his wife has given him every step of the way.
