How to insure your bike or e-bike?
Bike insurance is designed to cover your bike or eBike if it's stolen or damaged. In Australia, it's often available as a standalone policy made specifically for bikes.
Allianz doesn't offer standalone bike insurance. However, bikes and eBikes (with a maximum speed of up to 25km/h) can be covered with Allianz Home and Contents, Contents and Renters Insurance policies. This can be a simple way to include your bike alongside your other belongings under one policy.
Keep in mind that we don't cover legal liability for eBikes or eScooters. For example, you won't be covered if someone else is injured or their property is damaged while you're riding. Other legal liability exclusions may apply too, such as if an eBike or eScooter battery causes damage to someone else's property while charging. For full details of what is and isn’t covered by your policy, read the PDS.
Depending on your needs, this may be a convenient way to get cover for your bike without taking out a separate bike insurance policy.
What about motorbikes?
Motorcycle insurance is different. Motorbikes, trail bikes and quad bikes aren’t covered under home insurance. You’ll usually need a separate insurance policy for them. Allianz doesn't offer motorcycle insurance.
Cover for your bike: how it works with Home and Contents cover
With Allianz Home and Contents, Contents, and Renters Insurance, your bike and eBike is automatically covered for loss or damage inside your home when it's included in your general contents sum insured.
You can also upgrade your policy to cover accidental damage outside the home by adding optional portable contents cover.
What’s covered
What’s not covered
This is a summary only of some of the features available in our Home Insurance and Renters Insurance policies. Before deciding on this insurance, carefully consider the PDS which sets out the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.
Bike cover for outside the home
If you want cover for your bike when you hit the road, you can add optional portable contents cover to your policy. This can help if your bike is stolen, lost, or damaged anywhere in Australia. Keep in mind that it doesn’t cover you for legal liability.
It also covers accidental damage – for example, if someone runs into you and your bike gets damaged.
How to add portable contents cover to bikes under $1,000
If your bike is worth less than $1,000, you don’t need to list it.
However, if you’d like to get cover for your bike you can specify it as unlisted portable contents items under $1,000.
If you make a claim for unlisted portable contents, we’ll pay up to $1,000 per item and up to $5,000 per claim.
How to add portable contents cover to bikes over $1,000
When you get an Allianz Home Insurance quote, we’ll ask if you want cover for listed portable contents.
If you’d like to include your bike, you can enter a description and the value of your bike in the ‘Sports, leisure and hobby items’ section – for example, “Giant Talon 1 mountain bike – $1,300.”
Biking overseas?
If you’re travelling, your portable contents are covered anywhere in the world for up to 90 continuous days. We don’t cover your legal liability for eBikes or eScooters.
Covering your eBike in Australia
Allianz covers eBikes and eScooters with a maximum speed of 25 km/h, as long as you’re not using them for business, deliveries, racing, pace making or in competition.
Legal liability cover doesn’t apply to eBikes or eScooters. For example, we can’t help with compensation costs if someone else is injured or their property is damaged while you’re riding, or if your eBike or eScooter battery starts a fire.
But you can still insure your eBike itself. If you add optional portable contents cover to your policy, your eBike can be covered for damage when you take it outside your home.
For full details of what is and isn’t covered by your policy, read the PDS.
Frequently asked questions
Home Insurance doesn’t automatically cover your bike if it’s stolen while you’re out, unless you add optional portable contents cover. This optional benefit helps cover your bike in public places – for example, if it’s stolen while you’re at the shops or at work, though some limits apply.
With Allianz Home and Contents, Contents or Renters Insurance, make sure your general contents sum insured includes the replacement cost of your bike if you want cover while it's inside your home. The amount you insure will affect your premium.
If you want cover when you take your bike out and about, you’ll need to add the portable contents cover optional benefit, which may change your premium.
Contents policies, including ours, often already include cover for bikes and eBikes within the home as part of your standard cover. You may still want to insure your bike or eBike separately if you use it for business, deliveries, racing, pacemaking or in competition. These uses aren’t covered by our Home or Renters Insurance policies.
If you want to specify your bike under the optional portable contents cover and your bike is worth $1,000 or more, you’ll need to list it when you get an Allianz Home Insurance quote.
If you only want cover for your bike while it’s at your property, you don’t need to specify it. Just make sure you include its value in your general contents sum insured – that’s the total replacement value of everything you’re covering.
With Allianz Home and Contents, Contents or Renters Insurance, your bike isn’t automatically covered for accidental damage. You can add optional accidental damage cover to your policy though. This will cover your bike if something happens to it at your property.
If you’d prefer to have cover for accidental damage when you take your bike outside, you can add portable contents cover. This option gives you cover for accidental loss or damage anywhere in Australia.
Dirt bikes are typically considered as motor vehicles. Because of this, they’re not covered under Home and Contents Insurance. Instead, you may be able to get cover through our partner, Prevail, which offers motorcycle insurance.
Yes, bike accessories are covered automatically as part of your Allianz Home and Contents Insurance as long as you’ve included their value in your general contents sum insured. Items like helmets, lights, locks and other add ons are treated as part of your contents, so they’re included under your contents cover while they’re at the property.
If you want these accessories covered under your optional portable contents cover as well, you can cover them as either Unlisted portable contents or Listed portable contents, depending on their value.
If you keep your bike in a locked storage cage in a strata title building, there’s a $5,000 limit. Even if the cage is locked, $5,000 is the most we can pay for items stolen from that space.
Your contents are covered if they’re kept outside or in the open air at your insured address, up to 20% of your general contents sum insured.
If you leave your bike in an open area, like a driveway, carport, patio or verandah, you may not be covered for its full value. Keeping it in a locked area when you can is the best way to make sure you’re fully covered.
No, bikes and eBikes used for food delivery or courier work aren’t covered by a standard Allianz Home and Contents Insurance policy. Your cover only applies when you use your bike for personal use, like commuting, weekend rides, or getting around town.
If you use your bike for Uber or any other delivery work, you’ll need a specialist business policy instead.
