icare, the NSW Government’s insurance and care provider, along with the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DJC) and Safe TM, recently hosted a mock court at UTS on 20 November to demonstrate the serious consequences of failing to manage psychosocial risks in the workplace. We were proud to be the only claims service provider invited to attend by icare. This invitation is recognition of our strong track record of stepping forward for programs, pilots, and initiatives that improve outcomes for injured workers and those who support them.
As the largest claims service provider for the NSW Treasury Managed Fund (TMF), we manage around 85% of the education portfolio in NSW, giving us deep insight into the challenges faced by schools, universities, and education staff. Our participation reflects our commitment to sharing knowledge that helps education leaders create safer, healthier workplaces.
The mock court placed senior leaders in a simulated prosecution scenario presented over 3 stages over 2.5 hours, highlighting the legal and reputational risks of failing to address psychosocial hazards. These hazards, such as bullying, harassment, occupational violence, and aggression, aren’t abstract concepts for the education sector. Teachers and staff may face harassment from colleagues, dismissal disputes, or even aggression from students. These situations can escalate quickly, impacting mental health and exposing organisations to litigation.
