Building resilience: Allianz's commitment to customers and communities

Last updated on 19 August, 2025
At Allianz, we've created a brand platform focused on 'Care' to help strengthen our bond with customers. We aim to empower them to stay safe, avoid losses, and become more resilient. Our sustainability efforts centre on supporting both customers and communities, emphasising climate and social resilience.

There has been a notable shift in business focusing on sustainability goals. The Australian Government has set a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Some strategies in place to achieve this are:

  • Upgrading the electricity grid to support more renewable power.
  • Supporting businesses and industries to innovate and adopt smarter practices and technologies.
  • Encouraging businesses and consumers to reduce emissions.

Starting January 1, 2025, companies in Australia, including Allianz, must report their climate impact, and this is expected to speed up changes.

In late 2023, Allianz Group announced its net zero transition plan. It outlines the company's goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 in its investment and Property & Casualty (P&C) underwriting portfolios. The plan includes intermediate targets to reduce emissions across different parts of the business by 2030.

At Allianz Australia, we have already reduced our operational emissions by more than 80% per employee since 2019. We are working on more projects to help drive carbon reduction, such as transitioning our corporate vehicle fleet to electric vehicles and achieving 100% renewable energy.1

Going forward, we’re focused on reducing emissions across the enterprise, not only in our operations but in our investments, claims and underwriting as well. We have restricted our underwriting and investments in coal since 2015, and oil and gas since 2023.

We held our first Green Games in 2024. Allianz Australia employees were challenged to join forces and compete in fun tasks that benefit the environment and community. The weeks of the challenge were themed: food, waste, power and travel. Through the Green Games, we were able to:

  • Achieve potential reduction of 39.24 tonnes in carbon emissions
  • Fund trees to rewild koala habitats
  • Donate digital items to assist children in remote communities and newly arrived refugees
  • Enhance connection through 600 unplugged hours
  • Work 330 extra days in our offices, which are powered by 100% renewable energy.

The Green Games were recognised for the creativity and innovation that went into them and the measurable results they achieved. The International Association of Business Communicators awarded us a Gold Quill Award of Merit for Climate Change and Sustainability Communication.

In insurance, we see the impacts of climate change on our customers and communities. We want to help our customers and partners reduce carbon emissions and better protect themselves against climate change through predicting and prevention.

Allianz Prevention launched in 2025 with the intent to empower and educate everyday Australians on how to take care of their homes. We carried out site visits and provided trades, as well as sharing an array of home maintenance articles, tips, and tricks. This initiative helped Australians upkeep their properties and put measures in place to prevent claims on their home and contents insurance.

In 2023, we launched GreenSpecs in partnership with the Green Building Council of Australia. This tool provides information to help Australians make their homes more sustainable and resilient. It has been a success, with over 33,000 visits to the tool since launch.

In the social sustainability space, we have worked closely with some of our financial institution partners to better support customers experiencing family violence. We’re one of the first insurers to publish research around risks of family violence and insurance. We’ve also shared our findings with regulators and the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

Sustainability and the transition towards lower carbon emissions is important to our stakeholders, employees and our partners and suppliers. We view sustainability as a chance to build resilience and support new businesses and markets. We aim to align our strategies with our partners and suppliers to support their sustainability goals.

In future, data from our corporate customers and suppliers will form part of our climate disclosure reporting. By working with them to find ways to reduce their emissions, we will be helping to reduce our overall emissions. The better we do, the better our partners do. It’s a win-win situation.

As customers continue to become more conscious of environmental impact, sustainable products and services will be in demand. We’re looking to partner with businesses that share similar sustainability values to attract and retain customers and build stronger partnership opportunities.

We’re committed to contributing to an inclusive society. One in which all people – no matter their culture, background or ability, feel valued and can use their unique skills to reach their full potential. At Allianz Australia, we champion accessibility through an organisation-wide program of work. Examples of our commitment include being a:

  • Proud partner of the International Paralympic Committee since 2006, and became its first International Partner in 2011, which included Australia.
  • Member of the Australian Network Disability for advice on how best to attract, develop and support employees with a disability.

We’ve also partnered with Settlement Services International (SSI) to provide support and job opportunities to people from refugee backgrounds. Our goal is to help them achieve independence.

We believe empowering people to participate equitably at work and in the community helps promote fairness in society. When conditions that allow people to succeed exist, the economy and businesses thrive too.

What gets measured gets improved. We track and measure sustainability data including our emissions, our investments’ carbon footprint, and carefully monitor progress toward our targets and social impact.

We’ll continue to work towards the goals and ambitions set out in our global Allianz Net Zero Transition Plan. We’ll also continue to support our Australian climate resilience and social resilience initiatives.
