Allianz partners with Jigsaw Australia

Our Personal Injury Underwritten Workers’ Compensation team has welcomed some new team members – but this isn't your typical new starter story.

The new team members are supported by Jigsaw: a social enterprise that helps individuals with disability learn skills and gain confidence in the workplace.

The program started in June 2023 with a welcome morning tea and on-site training, followed by placement in the Underwriting team.

“The Jigsaw team are actioning things like wage declarations, renewals, and supporting the underwriters with general processing,” explains Alana Cooper, Personal Injury Head of Performance and Planning.

“We’re amazed by how quickly the team have been getting the work done,” says Samantha Squadrito, People and Culture Consultant for the Personal Injury division. “Tasks that we would expect to take up to three months, took the Jigsaw team two and a half weeks to complete.”

Not only does the Jigsaw partnership help solve business needs, but it’s also a clear example of how including people with disability can lead to business success.

The new and different ways of thinking that team members apply has benefitted the wider team.  “The tasks were organised based on current employee methods. However, the different ideas the Jigsaw team members have brought offer a fresh perspective on how to approach things,” explains Samantha.

For the neurodiverse team, the program offers a new way to think about future goals.

“The opportunity has provided me with more confidence,” explains Karl, one of the participants. “I see this as a supportive environment where I want to grow.”

For another participant, Ranya, it’s about getting a broader perspective. “I’ve enjoyed learning new skills for future employment and how Allianz works and supports the community.”

And for others, like Edward, the thrill and pride of working in a corporate environment can’t be underestimated. “The office building is very modern, and I enjoy the view,” he says.

For the wider team, the Jigsaw partnership is an example of how diversity enriches the workplace. This aligns with Allianz’s responsible business goals, helping advance wellbeing and making sure people thrive at work.

“Jigsaw provided some training in how to support neurodiverse individuals,” explains Alana, “but beyond that it’s been so rewarding to see the Allianz and Jigsaw team work together to achieve positive outcomes.”

The team at Jigsaw Australia share a similar sentiment, "The Underwriting team have been so welcoming and supportive of the Jigsaw team. It's been amazing to see the growth and skill development of each of the team members during the pilot period. This experience has been invaluable," says Jessie Moore, Strategic Account Manager, Jigsaw Australia.

And looking ahead, Alana explains, “The ultimate goal is to transition Jigsaw participants into permanent employment within Allianz, if they’re interested.”

“And we’re constantly looking for different opportunities where we can continue to work with Jigsaw… because we can really see the difference that they’re making.”
