Your duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation

When you apply for insurance that you’re buying wholly or predominantly for personal, domestic, or household purposes, such as home or car insurance, you have a duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation. We’ll ask you specific questions. Your answers are important. They help us decide if we can offer you insurance and the terms that apply to the insurance, such as price.

You must answer our questions honestly, accurately, and to the best of your knowledge and not make a misrepresentation to us. A misrepresentation includes a statement that is false, partially false, or that doesn’t fairly reflect the truth. This duty also applies when you answer questions on someone else's behalf.

If you don’t comply, we may cancel your policy or refuse to pay or reduce the amount we pay for a claim. If you answer fraudulently, we may treat your policy as if it never existed.
