NSW Workers' Compensation claims

Working to support you at every step of your claims journey

If you’re injured at work, your first priority is to see your doctor and let your employer know what’s going on as soon as possible.

You (or someone acting on your behalf) must make an entry on your employer’s register of injuries.

Have a question about workers' compensation? Give one of our workers' compensation specialists a call.
Whether you’re a public or private sector employee, there are a few simple steps that you and your employer must take to lodge a workers' compensation claim.

If you’ve been injured at work and would like to make a claim for workers' compensation, then you’ll need to provide your employer, insurer or icare with a Certificate of Capacity (medical certificate).

In most cases, your employer will submit your workers' compensation claim with us on your behalf.

Here’s what your employer will need to do to submit a workers' compensation claim on your behalf.
Notify us within 48 hours of becoming aware of a work-related injury or illness.
Basic details about the injured worker, their injury and treatment are needed to submit a claim.
Once we’ve received your claim, we’ll assign a case manager who’ll contact you within 3 days and provide more information about the claims process.
Whether submitting a claim online, by email or phone, the following details are needed:
  • Employer’s details including contact details
  • Injured worker’s details including employment and contact details
  • Information about the injury, such as the date of injury, nature of the injury, where the injury took place, etc.
  • Treating doctor details and contact telephone number or name of the hospital (if applicable)
  • Date the injured worker stopped work
  • Details of any time off work and if medical treatment was required
Employers can choose to submit claims in the way that’s most convenient for them.
The simplest way is to complete and submit claim forms online using icare’s Claim Management System. Or, if preferred, give us a call.

Once we’ve received your claim, we’ll do the following:
  • Assign a case manager who will be responsible for supporting your claim.
  • Contact you within 3 days of receipt of your claim to advise your claim reference number and the contact details of your case manager.
  • Determine provisional liability within 7 days of receipt of your claim. If your claim is provisionally accepted for time loss, your wage reimbursement will begin.
  • Tell you whether the claim has been accepted or not. It can take between 4 to 12 weeks to make a final liability decision depending on the nature of your claim.
  • Keep you up to date on the progress of your claim and encourage you to contact us if you have any questions.
