Icelandic New Year's traditions centre on neighbourhood bonfires and the main event on the night is the annual Áramótaskaupið ('The New Year's comedy'), which is broadcast on national television and parodies major news events from throughout the year. The people of Reykjavik collectively create their own fireworks shows in communities across the city which make for a truly unique display of light and sound. Icelandic people are well-known for their hospitality and are keen to welcome visitors to join in the neighbourhood festivities and lively entertainment in the city's many pubs and clubs.


For NYE 2013, Dubai shattered the world record for the biggest fireworks show with 479,651 fireworks being set off in just six minutesii. Going into next year, Dubai is planning to out-do itself again by combining its Arabian heritage with modern elegance for a one of a kind celebration. Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa tower are the main attractions with music and dancing beginning at 8pm and lasting until midnight when fireworks light up the night skyiii. Atlantis, the Palm and Nasimi Beach are also set to ring in the New Year with live music and midnight fireworks set against the backdrop of the spectacular hotel on the shores of the man-made island, Palm Jumeirah.

No matter what time of year you visit Scotland, there is almost always a festival taking place and New Year's Eve is no exception. The Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party welcomes revellers from near and far for a night of music, dancing and fireworks set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. The festival begins on the 30th of December with the Torchlight Procession where thousands of torchbearers light up the city streets accompanied by the sounds of traditional bag pipes and drums. On the 1st of January, join the locals in the annual Queenferry Loony Dook plunge into the freezing waters of the River Forth to raise money for charity.
