Business Engagement & Capability Manager, Alana Cooper, shares her passion for mentoring.

“I love being able to work with people to help them navigate challenges and build confidence.”

Being a leader at Allianz is a responsibility I take very seriously. I know that what I do has a direct impact on my team’s happiness, confidence and productivity. I’m committed to helping people grow and thrive, which is what led me to first apply as a mentor in Allianz’s Network for Equity and Opportunity (NEO) mentor program almost two years ago now. NEO works to help drive our gender equity agenda, which encourages both men and women to advocate for positive change.

Another area I’m passionate about is early intervention to support people’s mental health, and in particular youth mental health. I had previously heard about Raise Foundation, which supports youth wellbeing and engagement through early intervention in high schools. But when I saw an advertisement seeking youth mentors, I knew this was something I really wanted to do; I immediately applied. Two weeks later I started my youth mentor training.

As a youth mentor, I spend two hours a week at a local high school supporting my mentee in one-to-one sessions. My role is to be a trusted, neutral adult who is willing to listen. It might not sound like much, but for these kids it’s something they may not have, so it makes a real difference just to have someone they can talk to. Allianz has been incredibly supportive, helping me to manage my work responsibilities and time across the week.

I think volunteering shows that a person has a desire to make a difference. For me, as a mentor through NEO and as a youth mentor with Raise, volunteering has given me a deeper sense of purpose in life, and an opportunity to create connections with others.
