Q. Does a condition of your business loan require you to have insurance cover for building and contents? Could your business survive fire, storm or malicious damage and could you afford to replace stock and furniture after one of these events?

A. You should insure your business against Fire and Perils.

Fire & Perils covers your business for damage to property, including building, contents (for example computers and electronic equipment) and stock (including customers goods) caused by certain defined events.

In addition to fire, storm and malicious damage, other events which are covered include explosion, earthquake, wind and/or water and leakage of liquid.

Loss of, or damage to:

Buildings – building structure, walls, footpaths, etc
Contents - equipment such as printing presses, computers, photocopiers, telephones and business records
Goods & Stock in Trade or work in progress, such as paper and client computer disks

Examples of events which are covered by this policy include:

Damage to stock in trade caused by a burst water main
Damage to lawns, shrubs and trees caused by fire
The cost of hiring a temporary security guard following damage to the building

Accidental damage is automatically covered to $50,000. You can choose to increase this level of cover.

Allianz provides a choice of settlement options:

Reinstatement or replacement value - cover is provided for repair or replacement on a new for old basis
Indemnity value - cover is provided for the cost to repair or replace property, making an allowance for wear, tear and depreciation
