Critical Illness cover

Critical Illness cover is also know as Trauma Cover and pays a lump sum benefit if the life insured suffers one of the defined Critical Illness events.

Sometimes even the healthiest people are diagnosed with illnesses they have little chance of preventing – like cancer. Critical Illness benefits are paid regardless of the life insured’s ability to work. The funds can be used for any purpose the Policy Owner chooses, whether for the reduction of debts, to seek specialist or alternative medical treatment, or make lifestyle changes (such as reducing working hours).

Major illnesses which are covered under Critical Illness policies generally include (but are not limited to):

  • Cancer;
  • Stroke; and
  • Heart conditions.

Cover for defined Critical Illness Events

Allianz Critical Illness cover pays a lump sum in the event that the Life Insured suffers one of the defined Critical Illness events and survive for a period of at least 14 days (where you have combined cover this ‘survival period’ does not apply).

The maximum benefit payable for each life insured is the relevant Cover Amount shown on the policy schedule for the relevant life insured.

The minimum Critical Illness Cover Amount that can be applied for is $50,000. The maximum Critical Illness Cover Amounts you can apply for is $500,000.

Inflation Proofing
Critical Illness Cover Amounts automatically increase each year to keep pace with inflation (the increase will be the greater of the increase in the CPI over the previous year or 5%). Each year premiums will be adjusted to reflect this increase and any increase can be declined, by advising us in writing.

Eligibility for Critical Illness cover
Anyone between the ages of 16 to 55 (inclusive) may apply for Critical Illness cover. We will ask you some questions about your health, lifestyle and family medical history to determine whether or not we are able to offer you cover. Once a policy has been accepted and issued, and provided premiums are paid as due, we guarantee to renew it until the life insured’s 70th birthday.

What conditions does Critical Illness cover?
The following 14 conditions are covered under Allianz’ Critical Illness cover:
  • Cancer*
  • Open Chest Surgery*
  • Coronary Artery By-Pass*
  • Triple Vessel Angioplasty*
  • Heart Attack*
  • Stroke*
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Lung Failure
  • Kidney Failure
  • Liver Failure
  • Major Organ Transplant

Each condition is assessed against a specific definition before any claim can be paid. These definitions are located in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Policy Document.

Conditions marked with * such as Cancer, will not be paid if the condition occurs, is first diagnosed, becomes apparent or the recommendation for surgery is made within three months of:
  • The commencement of the benefit; or
  • Any increase in the benefit (but only in respect of the increase); or
  • The reinstatement date where Allianz has agreed to reinstate the benefit after it has lapsed.

When we will not pay a benefit
There are circumstances in which Allianz will not pay a benefit for Critical Illness. We will not pay a claim that arises directly or indirectly:
  • Where the condition is a result of a self-inflicted Injury.
  • No Critical Illness cover benefits will be paid in any circumstances if the Life Insured has not applied for the cover personally or where the application was completed on behalf of another person.

We may also decline a claim in circumstances of non-disclosure. For information on when we may refuse a claim due to non-disclosure please refer to “Important Information” section of the PDF Download Allianz Life Plan Product Disclosure Statement and Policy Document (PDS).
