Case study

Donna and David

Donna and David met about five years ago. Donna and David always wanted to provide the best for their family. They loved to have fun and always wanted to spend time with the kids. They wanted to raise a family together and experience all life has to offer.

Two years after they had married, they bought a house with plenty of room for a family. Time flew by quickly and Donna got pregnant with their first daughter, Mary. Donna decided to give up her job to take care of Mary and be a stay at home mum while David advanced his career as a software consultant. He was now earning $150,000 a year. Things were on track for Donna and David and they were happy.

Time flew by and Mary had just started primary school. Donna and David were thinking about having a financial plan put together to look after Mary in the future but they never quite got to organise it. Paying the mortgage and day-to-day bills always took priority over insurance.

One day their world crashed down when Donna lost David in a tragic accident. David was on a business trip when he met an unfortunate accident and lost his life. The loss of David had an emotional and a financial impact on Donna and her daughter, Mary. Donna had to return to work to pay the mortgage and every day bills were hard to pay on her single income of $50,000.

There is nothing we can do about the emotional side of losing a loved one. Yet, we can assist with alleviating the financial impact of such tragedies by providing personal insurance options so that in the event that the unexpected occurs your loved ones are financially secure.

What would have helped Donna?

No one plans for an unfortunate event, but what one can do is to have a plan in place that provides financial support if any such event occurs. Donna would not have faced this financial crisis if she and David had a personal insurance. This includes:

What could she have done differently?

No one plans for the unexpected, but what you can do is to have a plan in place that could provide financial support in the event of a life changing experience. Donna may not have faced this financial crisis if she and David had a personal insurance plan. This could include:
  • Life Insurance: This insurance cover would have helped to pay out any loans (personal, mortgage, credit card etc) upon the death of either David or Donna and would have provided security for their daughter Mary.
  • Income Protection Insurance: This insurance cover would have replaced 75% of David’s income after the accident and would have paid as long as he was unable to work.
  • Critical Illness Insurance: This insurance cover would have assisted with the mortgage repayments, cost of medical treatments and any time off work.
  • Permanently Unable to Work Insurance: This insurance cover would have helped them to pay off the mortgage, make any home adjustments to improve mobility and assist with long term medical bills.
