Last year, the Mazda3 overtook the Holden Commodore as the number one selling car of the year, a position that the Commodore had fiercely held onto for 15 yearsi. Mazda sold 41,429 of these cars in 2011, which was a 6.2% increase in sales since 2010ii. Overall, in terms of sales volumes by brand, Mazda ranked fourth in 2011 behind Toyota, Holden and Fordii.
According to figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Mazda sold the most cars in two car market segments in 2011iii. The Mazda3 held a 17.8% share of the Small Car sales category last year, and the Mazda2 sold the most cars in the Light Car segmentiii.
